Janosch is one of the most important children’s book authors and illustrators of the 20th century. None German author and illustrator characterized children and today’s adults than Janosch with his stories like „the trip to Panama“ or “a letter for tiger”. Beside his activity as an author, Janosch acts primarily as a free lance artist. His drawings, illustrations and figures were distinguished not only by highly endowed literary prizes, but also with various cultural prices, art awards and film awards. The Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany has lent to Janosch in 1993 for his engagement of generation-crossing association.
The artistic claim in the illustrations of Janosch developed until now. His unmistakeable style is recognizable in prints and original paintings. His works are full of humorous details which include also criticism of the society and the church as subject. His colours support quite a lot of the topics and have strong symbolic character all around the title. Nevertheless, the most important element is the language. Quotations, sayings and conversations are integrated into the composition of the image, as a part of the whole. Also in the middle of the space, as a sign or speech bubble the linguistic elements are important stylistic elements in Janosch’s oeuvre.

1956 He began with his writing activity in the feuilleton. A friend recomend him to create his own figures for children´s books. His publisher started to name him „Janosch“.

After a periode in Paris, Janosch moved 1953 to Munich, where he visited the academy of fine arts and studied by professor Ernst Geitlinger. He quit his study after a few semester.
